Refugee mother and daughter in makeshift refugee camp ne Taalbaya, Bekaa Valley, Lebanon

"There is no more Deraa – it is all burned". The mother and daughter had arrived the week before. Her Husband and sons were still in Deraa. Her two sisters and her daughter arrived the day before after spending two days under siege from shelling. Her other daughter remained behind with her child and the one year old child of the daughter who had fled. Both daughters' husbands were missing, assumed dead. As Syrian law dictates that the father has to give permission to take children out of the Country they could not take children out of Syria without their fathers death certificates. Eight of them are living in one tent, before her sister found another place to live, there were 20 of them living in tent. Boy sleeps outside on concrete block.

Syrian refugee family from Deraa. Beirut

They fled from Deraa six months previously. Fled with six of his children, one of his sons stayed behind, along with one daughter whose husband did not want her to leave. He was glad that he managed to get his other sons out of the country so they were not called up. In Lebanon his children were receiving no education. He wanted them to learn enough so that they would not be illiterate. Lives with family in disused shop. Sells coffee on corner of street, but due to Ramadam it had been a bad month and had not been able to pay rent for where they were staying. If he continued to not to be able to pay the rent he thought he would have to return to Syria. Originally stayed in the Sabra Palestinian refugee camp in Beirut but it became too violent.
